Both mechanical vaginal-cervical stimulation and pro­gesterone have been known to be capable of initiating pseudo­pregnancy in the rat. Coupled with the technique of artificial insemination, each of the above stimuli is then capable of initiating pregnancy. This study is concerned with a comparison of the duration and termination of such pregnancies. While mechanical stimulation and progesterone induce comparable pseudopregnancies, it is beleived that mechanical stimulation more typically and completely trigger the mechanisms that are responsible for the maintenance of pregnancy and the timing of parturition. A recently completed study indicates that this is the case in the hamster. This work tests the hypothesis in the rat.
