Book Chapter Description

The significance of meniscus root tears has become increasingly recognized in the literature. Meniscus root tears result in decreased knee stability, alterations in knee kinematics, and altered contact pressures in the knee. Root tears have been described to be functionally equivalent to complete meniscectomy and have been shown to lead to accelerated degeneration of the articular cartilage and arthritis development. Meniscus root tears can be treated nonoperatively, or with repair, with repairs being preferred in knees with intact cartilage. Root repairs have also been shown to have favorable results compared to nonoperative and partial meniscectomy treatments, in select patients. The purpose of this chapter is to describe meniscus root tears, consequences of tears, and treatment of root tears.
