Article Description

The hearts of 12 cats were studied by electron microscope 30 minutes, 1, 2, 4, and 6 hours after hgation of the ramus descendens of the left coronary artery. Tissue was taken from the center, the periphery, and the surroundings of the ischémie region. During the first 6 hours the changes in the center were much like those in liquefaction necrosis or in postmortem autolysis. In the periphery, however, part of the muscle cells showed increased density and homogenization which are interpreted as coagulation necrosis. During the first four hours large perinuclear vacuoles and intranuclear vacuole-like spaces appeared in both the central and peripheral regions. Beyond the ischémie region the muscle cells showed, beside a fatty degeneration, only minor, reversible alterations. © 1967 Springer-Verlag.
