Article Description

The Spanish theater of the Golden Age spread widely in Italy from the 1640s onwards, giving rise to a very high number of translations and adaptations that formed what was called the teatro alla spagnola. Traditionally it is considered that this lively interest was diluted in the last decades of the century to disappear at the beginning of the 18th century in favour of the French theater. The essay offers an overview of the peculiarities of reception of the Spanish classical theater in Baroque Italy and demonstrates the survival of the Comedia nueva in the first decades of the 18th century both among Italian professional theater companies and Jesuit school theater, among others.
