Article Description
Resumen La casa vernácula maya es un elemento importante en el paisaje de la península de Yucatán, especialmente en los pueblos, aunque no sólo en éstos. Su arquitectura se adapta muy bien a las características ambientales de la región, de manera particular a las altas temperaturas, y además demostró ser resistente a los huracanes que azotaron la región en varias ocasiones. A pesar de sus diversas cualidades, la casa maya fue y sigue siendo objeto de estigma, debido al racismo que existe con relación a los mayas en Yucatán y sus prácticas sociales, incluida la vivienda. Esto ha llevado a muchas personas a demoler sus casas vernáculas, reemplazándolas por construcciones de bloques, mucho menos adaptadas a las características ambientales de la península. Algunas casas mayas, sin embargo, resisten valientemente, incluso dentro del espacio urbano de una gran ciudad como Mérida, la capital del estado de Yucatán, aportando importantes pistas sobre las transformaciones en el espacio de la ciudad y cómo afectaron a la población maya residente en Mérida, pero también, en qué medida inciden las memorias y las prácticas habitacionales en la cuestión de la identidad étnica en un contexto urbano.
