Article Description

Lonchaea is the genus with the largest number of species and distribution within the Lonchaeidae family. Normally the individuals of this family are confused with those of the Tephritidae family when they are affecting fruits. The few taxonomic studies that exist on the genus make species identification really difficult, especially based on females since all the existing keys are based on males. The relationship between morphological and molecular variability was analyzed for specimens of the genus Lonchaea, considering an initial identification of the species based on the morphology of the males. DNA barcode sequences were assigned to specimens of the genus previously identified by morphology and verified by specialists, achieving by grouping in M-OTUs (Molecular Operating Taxonomic Units) the association of male-female genotypes, providing valuable molecular information as support to identify individuals of both sexes, and even immatures collected in the field or specimens present in entomological collections.
