Large conductance calcium-activated potassium channels (BK channels) are widely distributed in many tissues, including smooth muscle, skeletal muscle and neural tissue. The hypothesis that variants of the BK channel KCNMB1 gene are associated with the variability of heart rate and blood pressure regulation is a novel and an important concept. It is also a timely contribution to our understanding of the molecular genetic mechanisms that control baroreflex activity. We aim to clarify and raise further issues with respect to the findings of Gollasch et al. published in this issue of the journal.
