The case of Eloisa Guiguinto

Eloisa is an 18-year old freshman college education student at San Ildefonso College, Tanay Rizal. Eloisa's frequent complaints of headaches and dizzy spells, her listlessness in the classroom and her failure to meet the school work demanded of every education student, convinced the case worker that there must be something troubling this adolescent. She was taken to be the particular subject of this study so that she could be helped to grow into the maturity through self-discovery, self-acceptance. The student counselor aims to gain an understanding of the student in the circumstances that play around her problem and assist in bringing about a better-adjusted individual. The first action of the caseworker was to provide a favorable climate for the counselee who voluntarily sought her assistance. It did not take long for the caseworker to establish rapport and to gain the confidence of the subject. After two interviews, Eloisa opened up herself to the caseworker and poured out what would perhaps be the cause of her odd behavior in class. A few psychological tests (The Otis Self-Administering Test of Mental Ability, Higher Examination, Form A, The Sacks Sentence Completion Tests, The Mooney Problem Checklist and The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory), were administered to the subject by the caseworker herself for the purpose of gaining a deeper insight into her problem and of knowing the student better so that a more reliable diagnosis of her conflict could be arrived at. Most of the valuable information that enlightened the writer was secured through interviews with the parents of the subject, particularly with the mother who was very cooperative and accommodating, and with the student herself. Information furnished by college and high school teachers also proved helpful. The principal method that was used in counseling the subject was the eclectic method, a combination of the directive and non-directive approaches, the caseworker, finding this most effective in this particular case.
