Syllabus Description

Goals: This course will introduce students to the scope of knowledge, theories, and skills forensic anthropologists bring to forensic death investigations. Students will develop and practice problem solving and critical thinking through close observation, evidence analysis, and presentation of results through written reports and oral testimony. Content: Location and recovery of remains, death scene investigation, dental analysis, time-since-death estimates, interpretation of trauma and pathology, and applications to international human rights violations. In addition, students will critically evaluate the scientific foundation of analytical techniques qpplied by forensic anthropologists. Results of investigations performed during class will be presented in both oral and written form. Taught: Alternate years Prerequisite: ANTH 1160 or CJFS 3400 or consent of the instructor Credits: 4
