Book Description
Bayeté Ross Smith is a visual artist, photographer, filmmaker, and educator operating at the intersection of photography, performance, film, visual journalism, sculpture, and new media. He lives in Harlem, New York. His work addresses contemporary social, political, and human rights issues and is included in the collections of The Smithsonian Institution, the Oakland Museum of California, the Birmingham Museum of Art and more. He has been recognized with multiple awards, fellowships, and grants for his work, including as a New York Times Embedded Media Maker, a Presidential Leadership Scholar, a 2021 CatchLight Leadership Fellow, a TED Resident, a Creative Capital awardee, and an Art for Justice Fund Fellow. Currently, he is the first-ever artist-in-residence for the Columbia Law School in New York City.In addition to his creative work, Bayeté helped launch and continues to work with the Kings Against Violence Initiative (KAVI), a hospital and school-based violence prevention organization in Brooklyn, NY.
