Thesis / Dissertation Description

The objective of this research is to investigate the computerized procedure of configuring machining systems of FMS. The use of the information of machining system configuration is twofold. One is to feed back to the product design and the process planning stages for improving the manufacturability of the products. The other is to use the information as the basis for modifications and improvements of the machining system design. The configuration of FMS is formulated as a problem of selecting single-spindle and multi-spindle machine combinations. The methodology for identifying multi-spindle operation patterns from product design and process planning information is investigated and an algorithm is proposed. A scheme based on fuzzy set theory, is proposed for modeling the similarity between multi-spindle patterns. The tool arrangement for multi-spindle patterns is achieved by cluster analysis heuristics. A rule-base approach is used to select the machines and then configure the machining systems.
