Article Description
Information on the effect of types of potato wastewaters upon the performance of an anaerobic treatment system is lacking at this time. The objective of this study is to investigate the feasibility of the batch, mesophilic, anaerobic digestion process in treating potato wastewaters, and to determine the treatment efficiency for organic pollutant removal. The three types of potato wastewaters used in this study included potato juice, potato starch, and mashed potato wastewaters. After 5 weeks of treatment, the potato starch wastewaters lost more TSS (total suspended solids) than the mashed potato and potato juice wastewaters. The potato juice wastewater lost more COD (chemical oxygen demand) than the mashed potato and potato starch wastewaters. With respect to gas production, the potato juice wastewater had the highest value followed by the potato starch and mashed potato wastewaters. Over 80% of the COD can be removed by the batch, mesophilic, anaerobic digestion process. The type of potato wastewater had an important effect on the COD, TSS removal and gas production. This research proved that the batch, mesophilic, anaerobic digestion process can remove a high percentage of organic pollutants from potato wastewaters.
