Artifact Description

Pakistan’s has surpassed Brazil to become the fifth most populous country and is in dire need of transformative change to boost family planning use in order to meet 12 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (Population Council 2019). This paper specifically analyses whether exposure to information on family planning have its impact on fertility. The mechanism for this relationship would point towards an increase in use of contraceptive measures due to increased information on family planning through media and health care, which in return would directly reduce fertility. Using the dataset of Demographic and Health Survey from year 2017-2018 for Pakistan it is analyzed whether a particular source of information either of media or healthcare has any association with current fertility behavior of women. Applying bivariate probit regression and controlling for geographical, social, and household specific indicators it is estimated whether current pregnancy (via contraceptive method used) is correlated with exposure to information related to family planning. The results show that information transmitted through television and health worker have a strong negative impact on current pregnancy status of women.
