Project Casa Ninos

Background and Purpose: The Dominican Republic is a country in the caribbean that shares the island of Hispaniola with the country of Haiti. The Dominican Republic has a population of around 11 million people. A third of the Dominican Republic lives on less than $1.25 per day and over 25% of the country lives in extreme poverty. Only 4% of the GDP is spent on education which in return 30% of children finish primary school. Over 700,000 children in the Dominican Republic are without parental care ,and majority of the children are under 15 years of age. Problem: In the Dominican Republic the poverty level is extremely high due to the lack of education and jobs. The public schools in the Dominican Republic is ranked the lowest out of all the Spanish speaking countries. Many children in the Dominican Republic are left to provide for themselves at an early age. Attending school is not enforced in the Dominican Republic. The island of Hispaniola is also plagued with natural disasters. The Haitian refugees became a bigger problem for the Dominican Republic economy. With no real welfare system in place families sometimes abandon their children to survive. Method: Project Casa Ninos is an Orphanage that was founded in 2011 by a German couple that resided in Sosua Dominican Republic. The couple noticed the enormous amount of children on the streets day and night. The first building was erected for girls in 2011, and the boys building followed shortly after. Casa Nino's is the only orphanage in the Dominican Republic that houses Dominican and Haitian children. Casa Ninos at this time houses 28 children, boys and girls ranging from 2 months to 17 years of age. The children are in need of clothes, food and educational materials. The organization that I belong too helps with food , clothes and the basic needs of the children along with maintaining the property. Results: With the help of many friends and family members and private donors we are able to give the 28 children of Casa Ninos a quality life. The children of Casa Ninos are able to receive quality nourishment and education due to all of the assistance from around the world. The children are excelling in school and learning the concept of helping the less fortunate. The quality of life for the children has improved due to all the help from around the world. Conclusion: The organization of Casa Ninos will continue to maintain a high standard of professionalism and empathy for the orphans of the Dominican Republic. I will continue to assist Casa Ninos in the effort to eradicate homelessness for children in the Dominican Republic. The support from all of the organizations around the world is appreciated and well needed. The children of Casa Ninos will humbly like to say thank you ,and keep up the great work to everyone who have donated and helped in any capacity.
