Letter from Bavaria, 1945 June 21

Davis writes that they had their first party last night. He says Latvian doctor was supposed to attend but had a "baby case" last minute. He writes that party had 5 German musicians, and that everyone danced and had a good time. In a P.S., Davis informs his parents that he just met the most beautiful Bavarian. She has a castle just 15 minutes south of where John is stationed, in South Bavaria. She has asked both Davis and John to visit. Her name is Anga Baroness von Bodeshausen. He writes that its legal to fraternize because her title is Swedish.Transcription:21 June 1945Bavaria, GermanyDear Folks:Last night we had our first party, 2 asked the blond Latvian Doctor, but possibly due to my 1st meeting with her, she had a “baby case,” at the last minute. Like ol’ Dr. Reynolds. We had our American and my Latvian interpreter out, however, and 5 German musicians. We had a pretty nice time. All the music was classical Ed. Hornowski, one of our new boys is a music teacher N.Y., and plays the violin and piano very well. Later on, after about 3 hrs of selections (oh yes, there was a ballet dancer there.) we danced.One thing I have learned to love here, is lettuce. Wodehouse on her estate in the Harz for most of in Germany. She had letters from him and everything- spoke perfect English, and she has a castle just 15 min from where John is in South Bavaria! And she asked me down and asked me to bring him, because of his coffee business, which she knew more about than I did. She has coffee plantations in Africa. Her name is Anga, Baroness Bodeshausen.
