Article Description

409 Salmon Street,Portland,Oregon,January 1,1903.Dear Uncle John,Your New Year's remembrance came this morning, and I thank you for it. A book is always a welcome gift to me, and I always appreciate your kindness in remembering me.I am in receipt of the money order for $20,also,which I will cash and take down to Anna the first time I go.It was indeed a great shock to us all to hear of Hiram's death, for we none of us realized how serious his condition really was, and all looked for his return soon, recovered in health.I think he, too, knew nothing about how near death he was when he went away.It is not only a great bereavement to Anna, but it leaves her in a very unfortunate condition, with her two little children out here among strangers and without a home. Hiram's father, too,is completely broken down.It has been a sad experience for Grace and the Doctor, too, for they both felt the great responsibility his coming to them for help brought. They did all they could for him,but it was too late, for he was already beyond help.(Letter incomplete)[Celia Galloway]
