thesis / dissertation description
In my first grade classroom, I implemented three positive behavior strategies: classroom meetings, positive time-outs, and student choice. I researched the three strategies from two positive-discipline approaches: Positive Discipline and Responsive Classroom. I carefully modeled and implemented the three strategies before I observed my students for six weeks. I surveyed their parents to see how they felt their children were affected at school and at home. I closely observed four particular students. I observed their daily time-outs, their interactions with others, and how they solved different problems with their peers. I saw tremendous growth over the six week period. Most importantly, I noticed their heightened awareness on how they approached and dealt with their peers. At the end of my research period, I had the students reflect on how they had become better problem-solvers.
