Oatnuts Park, a 26-acre wooded area near Allen Avenue in Portland, is divided into hundreds of tiny lots, which were given away as part of a cereal promotion in 1902. The city has been trying to get clear ownership of the land since the 1970s, and now owns more than 300 of the lots. Falmouth developer Bob Adam has offered the city $2,000 for a four-acre parcel in Oatnuts, and plans to preserve it as open space for the public. The city rejected his bid and made a counter offer of $26,000, which it would like to use fund title searches of the remaining acreage.
