article description
The history of older homes can be revealed through the artifacts that are left behind by their former occupants. Numerous resources are given that would enable would-be researchers to learn about their homes’ histories. Vignettes about three houses are presented: a house on Great Cranberry Island where a tradition that harks back to Europe of hiding shoes somewhere within the house is discovered; how to reassemble his house instructions are left by Loyalist transplanted Scotsman Robert Pagan who disassembled his home after the Revolution and moved to New Brunswick from Castine; and a John Calvin Stevens home in Portland where the owner says some of the best historical information he has been given has come from former occupants of his house.
