article description
The University of Maine at Orono's wood science and technology program has begun to emerge as a regional center for research and development in solid wood products, and faculty in the program have received federal grants and other outside funding to support a number of new projects. The federal Department of Agriculture last year awarded the university a $616,000 wood utilization research grant to study wood decay, increased log yields and engineered wood products, and the school has applied for another $900,000 under the program this year. The Maine Timber Bridge Initiative, started in 1990, is the university's most visible research project. Details, related article.
