article description
In 1987, Maine became the only state in the union to ban the sale of irradiated food. Recently, state senator John Baldacci, D-Bangor, introduced a bill in the Legislature to lift the ban, and he has the backing of both state epidemiologist Dr. Kathleen Gensheimer and Dr. Robert A. Graves, medical columnist for the Bangor Daily News. All three believe that foodborne bacterias, such as the E. coli bacteria, which killed two Maine children last year, are more of a threat than irradiation. Details.
