image description
Following the assassination of Alexander the II in 1881, his heir, Alexander III, commissioned the building of this cathedral to memorialize his father. The design, carried out by Alfred Parland, draws heavily from St. Basil in Moscow. Following the revolution, the church was looted and eventually was abandoned and fell into a state of disrepair, at one point being used a warehouse for a local theater. This 1976 photograph shows the church in a state of disrepair. In the 1990s the building was completely renovated.
