The University of Notre Dame’s Broome Campus touch football team, the Hunchbacks, have made it into the preliminary final of the Broome Touch Association summer competition in their very first season. The Hunchbacks finished second in the social grade’s regular season, an achievement made all the more impressive considering the majority of the Hunchbacks team are new to the game. The side comprising Broome Campus staff and students will now play the undefeated Rising Stars for a place in the grand final on December 2.Ironically the Hunchback’s opponents represent St Mary’s Secondary College, a local school which boasts strong links with the Notre Dame Broome Campus.Hunchback’s team captain Steve Boniwell, said the team had improved unbelievably since the beginning of the season.“We have really been working together well as a team and to get to the grand final would be a great effort in our first season.”“A few of the nursing students have had to go on their placements in some of the remote areas of the Kimberley so we’ll be missing a few players, but whatever happens we’ve really enjoyed the season,” Mr Boniwell said. The sporting success continues a triumphant year for the staff and students at the Broome Campus. Earlier in the year, on the shores of Roebuck Bay, the Hunchbacks were crowned tug of war champions for the first time during Broome’s traditional pearling festival, Shinju Matsuri. The Dragon Boat Racing team also tasted success on the water, but narrowly missed out on a birth in the prestigious final when it was beaten by the competition’s two lifesaving clubs who went on to finish champions and runners up.
