The bass trombone has become a popular and increasingly prominent instrument in professional and educational ensembles, but few method books are devoted to the development of bass trombone players. These few methods vary in their approach to the instrument, level of difficulty, and content of material. This essay provides an objective analysis of each method which may be used as a resource by college low brass instructors, private teachers, and band directors in evaluating, comparing, and selecting appropriate methods for their students. Method books were analyzed with respect to the following: beginning level of difficulty, number of exercises, length of exercises, tempos, rhythmic figures, tonal range, dynamic range, articulation markings, key signatures time signatures, expressive markings, written comments, and ratio of exercise-oriented material to etude-oriented material.
