Neoliberal ideals have drastically changed the shape of the public university. Instead of receiving a majority of funding from the state, students are now, more so than ever, burdened with the task of supporting the public university in the form of ever rising tuition and fees. It is no secret the cost of a public education is skyrocketing, the price has risen 33 percent, since the 2007-08 school year (https://trends.collegeboard.org/college-pricing). In order to justify this rising cost, the university must sell itself to potential students. The neoliberal university does this by running itself like a business where everything becomes a marketing opportunity, including diversity. The university selling diversity in a neoliberal way creates massive problems. First, it creates this idea of Fabricated Privilege that dominant groups can use to discredit struggles of minority groups. Second, it gives white students the idea that racial minority inclusion is only valuable because it gives them something, a skill, they can add to their resume. And third it allows students to embrace surface level inclusion but reject actually diversity on the basis of meritocratic hard work.
