The outcome of this Grant will be a book proposal and book outline. This project follows last year’s research in various Washington archives, made possible through a 12-month Smithsonian Fellowship I received. My focus is a cultural history of the nineteenth century American garden by examining seed catalogs, garden advertising, and seed company records. The objective is to understand how public relations materials chronicle the change in the view of the garden as an expression of a new middle class.
