Resumen Jesús Terán Peredo fue el representante plenipotenciario de la República Mexicana ante las naciones europeas, encomienda otorgada por el presidente Benito Juárez en plena confrontación con el imperio de Maximiliano, precisamente con la finalidad de procurar el reconocimiento de la República y la deslegitimación de la intervención militar francesa. El abogado masón, ex gobernador del estado de Aguascalientes, se valió del también iniciado español Juan Prim y Prats para gestionar una entrevista con el príncipe de la casa de los Habsburgo, a fin de que desistiera de su proyecto imperial, cosa que no sucedió. Hay versiones de que Terán se apoyó en la masonería para su labor diplomática confidencial, cuestión sobra la que se reflexiona en el presente artículo.
