thesis / dissertation description
Introduction: Delirium is the most common neuropsychiatric disorder among hospitalized patients, is associated with increased length of hospitalization, nosocomial complications and even increased mortality. There are several studies about risk factors to this condition, focusing on diseases, medications, and previous pathologies, but there are few that seek to identify patients’ baseline characteristics and hospitalization process factors, which is the objective of this study. Methods and patients: We conducted a case-control design study, including patients of the Fundación Cardioinfantil - Instituto de Cardiología with diagnosis of delirium, hospitalized between March 2011 and March 2013. We calculated a sample of 201 patients, 67 cases and 134 controls (2:1), the groups were matched by age, hospital floor, room type and date of hospitalization. Results: We found different variables related to delirium, some of these classically associated with the condition; after analyzing the data, the variables most strongly associated with the condition were: type of hospital income (ER or programmed), visual analog scale for pain, Barthel index and length of stay in the emergency room. Discussion: In our review, this study is the first of our country that seeks to identify the risk factors given by the patients' baseline condition on admission to the hospital, these easily identifiable factors are useful for the prevention of the condition and early treatment.
