Book Chapter Description

Carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCh) is a versatile biopolymer, which is applied in various industries. The CMCh exhibits unique biocompatibility, solubility, modification, and biodegradability properties, creating it an interesting topic for a book chapter. This chapter aims to comprehensively understand the synthesis, physicochemical properties, and applications of CMCh in the packaging, food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. Different synthesized CMCh are applied in antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-fogging, preservative, carrier, glazing agent, drug delivery, and wound healing. The first section explains the synthesis and physicochemical properties of CMCh, followed by its uses in packaging, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. In addition, new applications of CMCh in tissue engineering, nanotechnology, and gene therapy development were discussed. Finally, the biodegradation of CMCh composites is also mentioned. The book chapter emphasizes the demand of researchers and scientists to explore the advancement of CMCh, highlights the various types of CMCh in industrial applications, and provides useful information on prospective applications. The advancements of CMCh-modified products were observed in various industries, including packaging, food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. The upcoming generation is anticipated to spearhead a revolutionary wave of innovative CMCh-modified products.
