Book Chapter Description

As membranous organelles, mitochondria have been historically subject to a conceptual isolation from the ubiquitin/proteasome system. The degradation of damaged mitochondria is primarily accomplished by macroautophagy, but it has become apparent that the two major proteolytic systems are connected by shared components that are reliant on common molecular pools. The interconnectivity of these systems has implications on neurodegenerative disease.
