Book Chapter Description

Trematodes are a group of food-borne worms that infect humans worldwide. Endemic in Southeast Asia and parts of Europe, infections with trematode species in the bowel are not usually associated with mortality, but certain liver flukes have been associated with cholangiocarcinoma. Both groups are however associated with morbidity, particularly with high worm burden. Management is predominantly with oral praziquantel, and surgical intervention is relevant in select infections. Changes to farming practices, population education, and cultural food production practices can reduce the incidence of this neglected tropical disease.
