Book Chapter Description

Nowadays the major problem in the world is heavy metals contamina-tion in the environment. Recently, researchers have reported the toxic effects of heavy metals in humans, plants, animals and microorganisms. Owing to the toxic effects of these heavy metals, scientists are working on the bioremediation process of wastewater and soils to enhance the quality of water and soil for crop growth and yield. In the recent years, several techniques and methods have been used to remediate the contaminated soil and water, but most of them are expensive and not eco-friendly. Recently, use of microbes in the remediation of heavy metals is found to be economical and environmental friendly. In general, microorganisms improve agricultural soil stability as a result of continued plant growth and devel-opment under static conditions. Amongst the various microorganisms, microalgae play a vital in the remediation of heavy metals from wastewaters. The bioremedia-tion technique is an appealing and alternative method for heavy metal cleanup that is both cost-effective and efficient. In the recent years, microalgae have been used in a wide variety of extracellular and intracellular mechanisms for the removal of heavy metals present in the wastewaters. Microalgae have a high binding affinity for specific aspects and a net negative charge, making them appropriate for small-scale and large-scale heavy metal bioremediation processes in the industry. The present work clearly describes the bioremediation of heavy metals present in the wastew-aters using different microalgal species and their removal efficiency. As a conclu-sion, microalgae can play an environmentally favourable role in the carbon-dioxide mitigation process.
