Conference Paper Description

Previous studies have highlighted the benefits of gamification as a design strategy aimed at enhancing service experiences. However, there is limited understanding of the drawbacks of gamification that can result in its misuse. This paper examines the inefficiencies and ineffectiveness of gamification, particularly within the rewarding systems and money management aspects of electronic wallets. To address the challenges associated with misused gamification, it is crucial to comprehend the underlying issues in current electronic wallet rewarding and financing activities. Through qualitative analysis of interviews conducted with users before and after testing two given e-wallet prototypes, we found that simplicity and consistency in the experience of claiming rewards and making investments is essential to align with users’ preferred experience. Tangible price reductions of rewards are preferred over accumulated points, and there is a demand for location-based automatic rewards. Personalization of rewards based on spending behavior history, personalised visual spending records, and the removal of unnecessary steps such as topping up are highlighted to streamline user experience.
