Book Chapter Description

Callosobruchus maculatus may be genetically different with respect to bionomic characteristics and they also differ in their capacity to utilize unusual hosts. They may, however, rapidly adapt to such hosts and utilize them more efficiently. The multivoltine, polyphagous habits of pest bruchid species are then considered in the context of their origin from oligophagous, wild conspecifics which appear, in many respects, to resemble the typical non-pest bruchids in their life-cycles. The different habits of the pest species are a consequence of their lives as pests of stored legumes and not pre-adaptations for such an existence. The cultivation of their primary wild hosts is suggested to be the key factor that has resulted in their importance. -from Author
