Article Description

Different groups of Lymphoma, classified according to the histologic qualities of their stroma, were analysed in regard to the histopathology of their parenchyma, their clinical behaviour and course. 1. Benign lymphatic hyperplasias (cutaneous lymphoplasia, lymphocytoma) presented different histologic forms of differentiation such as the (a) lymphatic type, (b) granulomatous type, (c) reticulum cell type, (d) giant follicular type, and (e) plasma cell type. The clinical characteristics were the tendency to spontaneous involution and the favorable response to penicillin and low doses of X-rays. 2. Semimalignant chronic lymphoid proliferations (chronic reticuloses) appeared as the following histologic types: (a) lymphoid type, (b) reticulum cell type, (c) plasma cell type, and (d) eosinophilic type. Clinically this group was characterized by a protracted course lasting up to several decades and interrupted by frequent remissions. The histopathologic classification of: 3. Malignant lymphoid tumors (lymphosarcoma, reticulum cell sarcoma) presented some difficulties due to the frequency of transitional and mixed forms. The following types of differentiation were distinguished according to the prevalence of different cell forms: (a) large reticulum cell type (stem cells), (b) small reticulum cell type, (c) lymphoblastic type, (d) lymphocytic type. A comparison of original diagnosis, course, morphology and response to therapy revealed that it was impossible to correlate these factors in all patients satisfactorily. Consequently, in 18% of 166 patients (29 cases) the original diagnosis was not verified and had to be changed. © 1967 Springer-Verlag.
