Article Description
If two neoplasms of identical or different types are implanted into rats on the same day, both tumors will grow like the control neoplasm; that is, if the rates of growth for these neoplasms do not greatly differ from one another. If the incubation periods of the tumors differ greatly, the growth of the more slowly developing neoplasm will be inhibited. When the tumors are implanted at different times the primarily inoculated neoplasm grows unaffected. The growth of secondarily implanted tumors (Jensen sarcoma, Walker or Guérin carcinomas) is either slowed or completely checked by the primarily implanted Yoshida sarcoma. In contrast the Yoshida sarcoma as secondarily implanted neoplasm is not affected in its growth by primary implants of Walker or Guérin carcinomas, and is only rarely affected by a Jensen sarcoma. The second inoculation of Yoshida sarcoma into rats bearing this tumor was already unsuccessful after only a 7 day interval between the implantations. The greater the interval between the 1st and the 2nd. tumor inoculation the more exaggerated is this inhibition of secondarily implanted neoplasms. An explanation for this may be a nonspecific increase in resistance of the host organism resulting from the growth of the primary tumor. It may represent true immunity or an eventually developing tumor cachexia. The survival time of tumor bearing animals was usually reduced by a second inoculation. The earlier the second implantation, the greater the reduction in survival time. © 1959 Springer-Verlag.
