Article Description

Thrombosis of the jugular veins was induced in 21 rabbits by a modification of the Wessler technique. Recanalization occurred a few days later. The valves of the anterior and lateral facial veins were stained with silver and examined in "en face" preparations. In intact control preparations valves were regularly found close to the junction of both facial veins. Normal valves were recognized by their acute-angled commissures and by three layers of endothelial cells. Two of these layers, lining the valve-pockets, consisted of cells lying transversely to the axis of the vein. Only the endothelial cells facing the blood stream lay parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vein. Recanalized veins displayed the following changes of the valves: 1. Thrombosis of the valve-pockets; 2. valves shrunk to narrow edges more or less completely covered by endothelium; 3. broadening of the commissures; 4. adhesions of parts of the valves to the parietal endothelium; 5. thrombotic plaques overlaying the valves; 6. formation of polyps. Most of the changes listed result in an insufficiency of the valves. The possible role of primarily arising parietal thrombotic plaques in the sinus of the valves as a cause for the "physiologic loss of venous valves" is discussed. © 1973 Springer Verlag.
