Article Description

In rats the left coronary artery was ligated for from 2 to 60 minutes; after the ligature was released the animals survived 2 days longer. Under these experimental conditions the survival time of the myocardium was only 13 minutes. When this period was exceeded, however, the entire region supplied by the left coronary artery did not die immediately. Even after one hour of ligation usually both broad subepicardial and narrow subendocardial peripheral zones survived. The necrotic zone was cleared away faster after temporary ligation than after permanent ligation. The infarcts were hemorrhagic and often contained extensive calcifications of the necrotic muscle fibers. The calcium deposits were localized in the mitochondria. They were studied electronmicroscopically more exactly. © 1965 Springer-Verlag.
