Review Description

Due to the relevance of psychosocial factors for the outcome after left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation, a systematic psychological screening of the patient should be carried out before LVAD implantation. Psychological diagnostics are only used in exceptional cases to identify absolute contraindications and are more suited to identifying mental comorbidities and other psychotherapeutic care needs. Various LVAD treatment goals result in different psychological effects on the patient. A psychological co-treatment leads to an increased acceptance of the disease, relieves negative effects of mental stress factors and especially increases the health-related quality of life of LVAD patients. Due to the high stress level of the relatives, they should be involved at an early stage.
