Catalytic transfer hydrogenation of α-tosyloxyarylketones mediated by a chiral rhodium complex using an azeotropic mixture of formic acid/triethylamine afforded the corresponding 1-arylethanediol monotosylates in excellent yield with high enantioselectivity. © 2008 Springer-Verlag.
