Review Description

Free surface flows occur frequently in our daily lives and many natural or industrial settings. Our understanding of such flows has grown tremendously with progress in mathematical modelling and numerical simulations. As a consequence, the response of a free surface to an external perturbation can often be computed and quantified. The free surface response is characteristic of the imposed perturbation and can be thought of as the signature of this perturbation. In this review paper, we survey the literature which deals with the inverse problem of identifying unknown flow conditions or fluid properties from an observed response of the free surface.
