Article Description

Memory deficits cause a major disturbance of activities of daily living as well as quality of life and are a frequent complaint in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy. Solely standardized neuropsychological examination can objectify and further characterize cognitive impairments. Subsequently, in the context of other clinical information, such as site of the lesion in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), interictal and ictal electroencephalograms (EEG), seizure types and frequencies, medication affecting the central nervous system (CNS) and psychiatric comorbidities, the causes of memory deficits can be individually defined. Therefore, optimal control of influencing clinical factors is necessary before memory training, such as learning of compensational strategies can improve memory performance. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012.
