Article Description

Purpose: Grape (Vitis labrusca L.) processing results in some residues, such as bagasse, which still contains many bioactive compounds from the fruit. Considering that food processing residues are very promising sources of value-added materials, their recovery has emerged as a priority at a global level. Therefore, we sought to obtain grape bagasse extracts with antioxidant and antiproliferative activity in Hepatoma Tissue Culture (HTC) cells. Methods: We obtained the extracts using solvents considered safe for human health, viz. ethanol and ethyl acetate, by the immersion method at 35 °C. The MTT test was used to evaluate the cytotoxic/antiproliferative activity in 24, 48, and 72 h with 50, 75, 100, 150, 200, 250, 500, 750, 1000, and 2500 µg of extract mL of culture medium. Results: Ethanol extract showed 9% of mass yield (MY) and 196.5 µM of TEAC 100 g for antioxidant potential (AP) and ethyl acetate extract 5% of MY and 178.8 µM of TEAC 100 g for AP. After 24 h, neither extract showed cytotoxicity to the tumor cells; after 48 h, both extracts provided an increase in cell viability; and after 72 h, both the ethyl acetate extract (50, 75, and 100 µg m) and ethanolic extract (all concentrations) were cytotoxic to HTC cells. Conclusion: The extracts showed antioxidant activity and induced mortality of HTC tumor cells after 72 h, and the ethanolic extract showed better results than ethyl acetate extract in relation to the bioactivities evaluated.
