Article Description

In certain Escherichia coli strains that have altered RNA polymerases and are resistant to low levels of rifampicin, M13 phage synthesis is almost totally inhibited by the drug at concentrations that do not affect significantly the bacterial growth rate. Rifampicin does not prevent release of progeny phage particles from the cells, and its effect is reversible. The inhibition of phage synthesis is due to inhibition of phage mRNA synthesis by the drug.
