Article Description

Dactylium dendroides mycelia exposed to different oxygen tensions secreted galactose oxidase in proportion to the pO 2. The intracellular levels of galactose oxidase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase increased 10.4-, 2.3-, and 2.1-fold, respectively, when the oxygen tension was raised from zero to 100%. Oxygen consumption was enhanced by increased partial pressure of O 2 and was higher than CO 2 production above 40% O 2. The results suggest that galactose oxidase could participate in an oxygen protection mechanism and/or as a microbicidal agent in D. dendroides.
