Article Description

We have fabricated compositionally modulated palladium-cobalt heterostructures from UV photolysis of cobaltocene and allylcyclopentadienyl palladium. The interfaces between cobalt and palladium layers, formed by this technique, are not believed to be compositionally abrupt. We find that the magnetization (in-plane) for the various palladium-rich spacer layers suggests that the magnetic attenuation length in palladium is 135 ± 10 Å, consistent with interdiffusion at the interface. This is much larger than observed for heterostructures with abrupt interfaces. We also find evidence for enhanced moments due to the magnetic polarization of palladium in the vicinity of a ferromagnet, consistent with other investigators.
