Book Chapter Description

Epilepsy neuropathology mainly encompasses focal structural brain lesions that cause seizures, as well as secondary effects and changes in the brain as a result of seizures. In the former, the main abnormalities encountered include hippocampal sclerosis, low-grade tumors, and malformations that represent the commonest types of lesion in epilepsy surgical practice. The second group involves the study of brain regions, usually through postmortem examination, more vulnerable to seizure-mediated neuronal loss and gliosis, including the hippocampus, amygdala, thalamus, cortex, and cerebellum. Some cellular changes as a result of seizures, including inflammatory reaction and axonal sprouting, may promote further seizures.
