Book Chapter Description

With the introduction of methodology for isolation and cultivation of cells from man, the current knowledge has expanded rapidly, and, in the past few years, new syndromes of macrophage dysfunction have been recognized. This chapter explains macrophage dysfunction in man. The intriguing suggestions that macrophages are involved in the control of leukopoiesis and the modulation of humoral antibody production by lymphoid cells require more detailed examinations in man. It is possible to obtain human mononuclear phagocytes in reasonable quantities from the peripheral blood using continuous flow centrifuges or adherence techniques and from the peritoneal cavity and alveolar spaces under appropriate clinical conditions. Preliminary evidence has shown that microbicidal function of macrophages is impaired in a variety of pulmonary diseases and may be abnormal in certain neoplastic processes.
