Book Chapter Description

Family members are a source of care and caregiving across the life course, adapting relationships, roles, and behavior patterns to accomplish the associated tasks. This chapter provides a brief overview of caregiving demographics with an emphasis on variability. The risks and benefits of caregiving are examined from multiple frameworks, including stress and coping, evolutionary psychology, and resilience research. The life course and family relationships are examined as two major contexts of caregiving. Policy issues related to caregiving are reviewed, and support services are described along with evidence for their influence on caregiving processes and outcomes. The chapter culminates with recommendations for future directions in research, policy, and services.
