Book Chapter Description

This chapter introduces general information about brine water resulted as a by-product of desalination process that has serious impacts on environment both on-land and marine life. The characterization of such waste from different sources is summarized. It also highlights the common treatment Solvay process that employs ammonia to make beneficial product after the reaction of CO2 with brine water, beside its modifications proposed by different researchers. It gives attention toward general description of major carbonation processes using alkaline industrial wastes such: fly ash, slags, cement kiln dust, and bauxite residue, in addition to those techniques applying electrodialysis. Moreover, some practical examples are reported to emphasize the benefits of final products gained by the carbonation of the brine waste in construction materials and chloride/chlorine-based substances such as: HCl, NaOCl, and PVC polymer.
